How Synthetic Fibres Are Created and Why They Feel Different
Most fabrics have a story. Some start in a field. Others start in a lab. Polyester, nylon, acrylic.
They all begin the same way. Not grown, but manufactured.

Most synthetic fabrics begin with petrochemicals. Crude oil or natural gas is extracted and refined into smaller chemical components. These are processed into polymers, long chains of molecules designed to behave in a specific way.

This forms the base for fibres like polyester, nylon, acrylic, and elastane. At this stage, there is no fabric, just a chemical material ready to be shaped.

Turning chemicals into fibres
Once created, the polymer is melted into a thick liquid.

It is pushed through a spinneret, a device with very fine holes, forming long continuous filaments. These are cooled, stretched for strength, and sometimes twisted to resemble natural fibres.

This is how synthetic threads are formed, before being spun into yarn and made into fabric through weaving or knitting.

Engineering the fabric
This is where synthetics differ most. They are not just produced, they are engineered.

Manufacturers control thickness, fibre shape, stretch, moisture behaviour, and durability.
This is why polyester can feel soft in one garment and stiff in another.

What gets added along the way
Like all fabrics, synthetics go through finishing processes. These can include dyes, anti-wrinkle finishes, water or stain resistant coatings, softening agents, and anti-static treatments.

These processes improve performance and appearance, but they also shape how the fabric feels over time.

Why synthetic fabrics feel different
Most people notice it without knowing why. Some synthetic fabrics feel fine at first, then become warmer, less breathable, or more noticeable against the skin as the day goes on.

This comes down to low breathability, moisture behaviour that can trap heat, and a surface feel that is smooth but less adaptive. Unlike natural fibres, which respond to the body and environment, synthetic fibres tend to hold their structure. They do not change much once made.

Why synthetics are widely used
Synthetic fibres are everywhere because they are low cost, durable, consistent, wrinkle resistant, and easy to care for.

From a manufacturing point of view, they solve problems. From a wearing point of view, it depends on what matters to you.

A more useful way to think about it
This is not about good or bad, but about understanding the difference.

Synthetic fabrics are manufactured and engineered. Natural fabrics are grown and processed.

That difference shows up over time, not just when you first put something on, but in how it feels after hours of wear.

When you see polyester or nylon on a label, you are not looking at something that came from nature.

You are looking at a material designed from chemicals, shaped into fibre, and built to behave in a specific way.

Sometimes that works in your favour. Sometimes it does not.
